Uchitel intends to open an "escape room" attraction in the area within the next few months. The activity, which involves puzzles and strategy, has grown in popularity, but there are none in the Bergen County area, Uchitel said.

"It's challenging, it's fun, it's excitement," she told Daily Voice. "We see the trend ... It's like it's contagious."

Uchitel, a mother of two, is a partner at Bergen Remodeling, Inc. construction company and wanted to provide a fun family atmosphere for her next endeavor.

Though she's still finalizing a location, she said she wants to open "Black Hat Escape" in early to mid-May.

Some themes she hopes to incorporate include a science-fiction decor geared toward families, and a mad scientist setting. The latter proved too scary in her early designs, though.

Uchitel also wants the puzzles to be more complex than opening locks, she said.

"It's very good team-building for small companies," she said. "It really teaches to respect each other, to see how others think."

Once the weather warms Uchitel said she also wants to plan a puzzle event in a park. She said she plans to speak to members of the Bergen County Historical Society to add some historical data to make it educational.
